Gulf Porsche 917K Le Mans

Recommended Posts

My next build.

I've gone for a car this time, the GSX-R sapped my bike mojo a little.  I fell in love with 917 after seeing Le Mans with "Mr Cool" Steve McQueen as a young teenager, like no doubt many of you did too.  I've never built this type of car before, I've only ever built 2 cars and the last was oh 40 years ago my be that was a Tamiya 1/12 Tyrrell 003 that took me a year to save for, before that was a Airfix Humber staff car.

Here the car and it another Fujimi again the only one I could find that was in stock, not too complicated and had good reviews. It will mainly out of the box but I may have a go at some mods here and there.

Looks like a nice kit. Hopefully it doesn't live up to Fujimi's reputation. and Zero paints are awesome! Just remember not to go heavy with them.

Nice choice of kit to build! I will be interested to know your thoughts on the kit in regards to fitment and quality etc, my rule is never to buy Fujimi unless its an enthusiast kit but I love the 917k so I might be tempted!

I look forward to your progress mate :)

I didn't really want to buy another Fujimi, but I couldn't find another kit at a reasonable price that wasn't too complicated.  As I said I've never build this sort of car and only a few ever, I'm hoping to get my skill to a point I can move on to Tamiya/Ebbro 1/20 F1 giving me the opportunity to develop them enough to move on to MFH kits.  I just can't justify their cost with my current skill level.

I will of course give feed back as I build the kit,  from what I can see on the sprues it looks pretty good.  Unlike the GSX-R there is very few small key parts so moulding and their fit is less critical, but you never know I've certainly learn that lesson with Fujimi!

Thanks for the feedback, I think you underestimate your capabilities, after seeing your GSX-R build I am fairly certain you could make an MFH kit look great.

Anyways following with interest :)

I built this kit back in 2012 on eScale.  If I remember right, the decals don't go down far enough, so you have to try to match the orange. Other than that, it's a good kit.  I would recommend it.

Looks like I've got the Fujimi curse again, the poly caps for the wheels are missing from the kit, part K as label the spure.  Right bloody pain I've tried emailing them via their website but it doesn't work so I'm a bit stumped, I'll have to try and make them out of sprue section somehow!

Oh thats not good! Did you get the kit from a retailer? Perhaps contacting them would help? Otherwise would Tamiya poly caps work? I think I have a bunch of them if you need

From what I'm told it's pretty much a lost cause trying to get replacements,  I've checked everything I've got which isn't a lot an is from armour kits.  I need 4mm OD, 2mm ID, 3mm long, if you've got anything close it would be a help?

Up date time :D work has kept my away from the beach and the site to a large extent over the last couple of weeks.

But on arriving home this afternoon there was a brown envelope on the mat. oh it's bill again I thought ..............................how wrong was I

I'd gone onto Fujimi website the same day I discovered the sprue was missing and used their contact page, all very easy to follow, it tells you you'll be sent a confirmation email etc, I never got one so thought oh well.

Well they got it and to their great credit sent me the spure, top marks Fujimi I'm certainly going to reverse my decision about not buying another of their kits.

Some parts have heavy flashings
39001485630_941113bdf4_k.jpg
With some challenging sprue attachment points, these were in an area too small for cutters and difficult to get even a chisel blade in.

The 4 holes for the seat fame needed to be enlarged to accept the mounts.
