Next build. Inspired by others I have seen here. Will make a start over the next few days.

Not sure who I'll choose yet, Rocket Ron Haslam or Randy Mamola. Was never a Freddie fan.

Made a start today. Waiting for the glue to cure on the rear and belly pan before sanding and seeing where I'll need to fill.

Some slow progress. I have the cowlings together and primed, but I obviously didn't do a good enough job on the mould lines on the top fairing. I marked them with a sharpie then sanded them down, yet they still showed through the primer / surfacer.

I have the engine and carbs together, just waiting for paint.

Hi Peter - looks like a lot of prep work for this kit??

Is it only the front cowl with heavy molding lines or are other parts that way too??   Usually Tamiya is pretty good with minimizing the molding marks

I have a couple of these kits too with the fork sets and the Hobby Design detail sets.

I'm not sure which riders I will build them for - Probably do one for Spencer as he was the lead rider for Honda then.

The other maybe Mamola??

They had MotoGP at Jerez Spain today - did anyone catch it?? - It was on NBC Sports today  - - Free TV here in the USA another race in 2 weeks at Brno for anyone interested.

Cheers

John

Hi John, no, there's no more work than normal. The mould lines weren't even that pronounced, so I was surprised to see them appear.

Hello looking at the kit I own.... did you understand where decal 64 are to be placed? They seems to be the black border lines of yellow tables but the angle of the decal is 90 degrees the angles of the tables are different... and why they are so long? Do you think to use the decals for the blue or will you paint it?

@andrew59it, I just checked them out - I think they are for the number panels, but you're right, the corners will not work, or at least you would need to make many cuts to get the correct corner angles. I will use the decal number boards.

I plan to paint the blue areas as I think I have a better chance of a cleaner result with paint. I'll use decanted Tamiya TS15.

Wow, not much action 'round here these days! We're in serious lockdown here in Melbourne. I'm working from home, but not getting much "bench" time in.

So have cowls masked up ready to go. Will throw some paint at them tomorrow.

Far from perfect, but I'll settle with how it turned out and use the white stripe decals to clean up the stripes...

Started the decals....

Mixed results... The side number "plate", made up of three parts went down very well, as did the front panel. But, the number broke up when I sliced with a new scalpel blade (so much for doing Randy Mamola's bike). Even the 1 was problematic and is very brittle.

Used the last of my Finishers GP1 urethane clear, awesome stuff. Very happy with the finish, will lightly sand and polish next weekend.

Very nicely varnished .
I see you are using the fibrous masking tape from Tamyia .
I find the new vinyl tapes from Tamyia or 3M much better for such narrow curved lines.

Thanks @mueller, I agree, the vinyl tape is much better and will use when I can in the future. I placed the masking tape over the decals as a template. The vinyl tape is not as transparent.

Body panels all polished and awaiting the inside coat of carbon black.

Engine mounted into frame - I need to tidy up some wash tide marks....

I'm quite satisfied with the finish of the chambers. Perhaps a little more clear brown to overcome the violet hue - but it's more pronounced in the photos than it actually is. I started with a base of Mr Color Super Titanium; a little Alclad clear blue and red; Gaianotes clear black and clear brown; finished with a dusting of MRP burnt metal violet.

Hey Griffo - It's been a while since I was on the forum - Really nice work.

I think you nailed the expansion chambers perfectly with the colors - The subtle violet sepia is perfect.

Your exhausts are about the best I have seen or a 84' NSR500

I agree with Mueller about using the vinyl tapes for the edges - makes for much cleaner lines.

Your painting of the bodywork instead of using the decals is admirable.  It's not so easy to paint it all rather than use decals.

Which paints did you use for the bodywork and also the pipes

Which wash did you use on the frame??  it looks really well applied.

Really a nice addition to the other 84' NSR500s on the forum

Thanks for sharing Griffo

John

Thanks @John18D! Welcome back¬†ūüėĀ¬†I was really happy how the chambers¬†turned out. I used TS15 blue, TS26 white and LP21 Italian Red for the body and a mix for the chambers -¬†a base of Mr Color Super Titanium; a little Alclad clear blue and red; Gaianotes clear black and clear brown; finished with a dusting of MRP burnt metal violet. The was is Tamiya panel line accent - black.

The 40mm masking tape is "fibrous" as @mueller points out. Will have to get better with the thin vinyl stuff.

Some more progress:
